I am not too interested in the on-line meeting room, though I am especially interested in encouraging conversation that is held on-line. I want to be able to follow and contribute to distinct themes and topics, and keep those topical conversations clumped together. Blogs, Emails and Facebook formats seem to chronologically frame discussions more than thematically. The NowComment also does not seem to engage students in being able to direct as well as and respond to the distinct themes of a particular conversation. thanks for any suggestions…

Crowdsourcing to the right crowd. I also plan to be present the day you are doing this, so now very curious to check your session out with my trusty laptop at hand.

Comment on Sharon Freeman, President DeBary Hall, Inc. by wilhelminarandtke http://florida2012.thatcamp.org/02/16/sharon-freeman-president-debary-hall-inc/#comment-169 Sat, 18 Feb 2012 21:35:54 +0000 http://florida2012.thatcamp.org/?p=139#comment-169 Omeka is a digital library platform – so a tool for hosting a bunch of things that someone would search, and those things don’t change. It’s good for a photo collect, bunch of e-books, etc.

It sound like you want a better web tool, so something like Drupal or WordPress. Those would be good for your website contact info, board member list, and other content that changes from year to year.

Does Friends of DeBary Hall have a bunch of photos of the historic site that you’d like to host, a bunch of documents related to it’s history, or anything like that? If so, then Omeka.net might be a good way to get those out there. The advantage to it is, you can more easily share your pics, docs, etc with other digital libraries and put them out there in the bigger historical community.

I’ve never done anything using the Google Maps API, but getting your experiences with it (since it sounds like you used it some) could be good for me to spot when it’s a good tool. I’ll try and ask you about this, if I see you.

You are interested in emerging interfaces, and maybe even more than threading? So, something like Google Wave or other new interface, where the online meeting room mixed with the discussion board?

I think this is mostly straight ethics (ie. not legal or something that will be enforced by anything other than culture after the narrator has died).

What kind of marketing materials? Print, email, web, social media? My experience has been that the more you can pin down the audience and find an objective, the more effective a marketing plan will be. Look forward to brainstorming this weekend.

I, too, would love to talk thru the various pros and cons of different CMS. I build custom WordPress installs regularly, so I’m able to contribute what it can do and, perhaps more important, what it cannot!

How can we enhance the possibilities that our digital projects will be of interest/utility to non-academic audiences? Tips? Guidelines? And, how might these projects be used? User studies?

Comment on symposia ensoniment of Plato’s Symposium by johnbork http://florida2012.thatcamp.org/02/07/symposia-ensoniment-of-platos-symposium/#comment-146 Wed, 15 Feb 2012 17:47:24 +0000 http://florida2012.thatcamp.org/?p=88#comment-146 The current version of the software requires a GNU/Linux-based development environment (I’m using Ubuntu 11.04 and 11.11 on bare hardware and VirtualBox virtual machines–so you can use a Windows-based or Mac-based host) to compile and run the program to be one of the speakers (Apollodorus, Glaucon, companion, Aristodemus, Socrates, Agathon, Alicibiades). It will also be connecting to a MySQL database host over a wired or wireless network I will set up.

We are looking for interesting passages in the Symposium where there is a lot of interaction among the speakers to hear what it will sound like (hard not to say ‘see’ what it will sound like) in simultaneous Greek and English (and more languages if we have time in the workshop to add them) text-to-speech synthesized voices. I will update the main posting with more technical requirements in the next day or so. Thanks for your comment!

I have had only a fleeting opportunity to look at the new iTunes U, but have not had a chance to play with Author yet. I would love to do that this weekend with other folks are interested in trying to press it into service for humanities classes in more creative ways than I have seen to date from e-textbooks, etc.

I would love to be in on this session. The process of creating THATCamp Florida has been driven by a desire to foster collaborate work and to help facilitate the kinds of connections that can make that work possible in Florida. I am looking forward to discussing that with fellow campers this weekend.

There may be a connection, though, between the two; I am not sure.

I don’t think any of the usual translator people will be at THAT Florida, but we’re happy to give pointers and advice. If there’s no one to lead a workshop we could even talk about having someone do a skype or google+ videotalk.
