I am very interested to know the best tool for on-line threaded discussions. This is for both research and teaching so that multiple people involved can guide the themes of the conversations. Thus, the responses are not chronologically organized, but thematically, and can create topically guided dialogues.

OK, that’s interesting. You are interested in emerging interfaces, and maybe even more than threading? So, something like Google Wave or other new interface, where the online meeting room mixed with the discussion board?
Yes. I am not too interested in the on-line meeting room, though I am especially interested in encouraging conversation that is held on-line. I want to be able to follow and contribute to distinct themes and topics, and keep those topical conversations clumped together. Blogs, Emails and Facebook formats seem to chronologically frame discussions more than thematically. The NowComment also does not seem to engage students in being able to direct as well as and respond to the distinct themes of a particular conversation. thanks for any suggestions…
